Russia has warned that the West’s deployment of military forces and infrastructure in Ukraine will be seen as foreign interference posing a direct threat to regional security.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova emphasized that any military infrastructure—including bases, warehouses, and other facilities—would be considered legitimate targets for the Russian armed forces.
Zakharova expressed serious concern over plans by the UK and France to establish military bases in Ukraine following a ceasefire agreement. According to her, UK Labour leader Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have signed a trilateral agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to develop these bases.
She denounced the move as an attempt to continue the militarization of Ukraine, with no genuine plan for a peaceful resolution. “The agreement is aimed at escalating the conflict, not achieving lasting peace,” Zakharova said.
Regarding the agreement’s details, Zakharova said Western allies intend to deploy “multinational forces” in Ukraine to support the rebuilding of the Ukrainian armed forces and deter Russia after the ceasefire.
Moscow reiterated its position that a peaceful solution can only be achieved through Ukraine’s return to neutral status outside military coalitions, its demilitarization, and respect for the rights of Russian-speaking citizens and ethnic minorities.
