Weather: Meteorologists clash over snow in lowland areas and islands – the forecast for the coming days

Forecasts warning of “polar outbreaks” and snowfall reaching sea level have sparked controversy, with Kolydas and Tsatrafyllias cautioning against exaggeration and clickbait

Newsroom January 9 08:47

The weather outlook for the coming days has become the focus of intense debate following forecasts predicting a sudden cold snap and possible snowfall even in lowland, coastal areas and islands of the Aegean. These projections have triggered reactions within the meteorological community, with several experts warning that exaggerations could mislead the public.

Marousakis: From southerly winds to “polar outbreaks”

The debate was ignited by a post from meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis, who forecast sharp weather changes in the days ahead. According to him, Greece will shift from stormy southerly winds, high temperatures and hazardous rainfall to “polar temperatures and snow right by the sea.”

He explained that the violent clash of air masses with differing thermal and humidity characteristics will create significant pressure gradients, leading to storm-force winds with shifting directions. Marousakis also spoke of a possible descent of a polar air mass starting Sunday, raising the prospect of snowfall even at low elevations in Attica, Evia, islands of the Aegean, and mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of Crete.

Kolydas: “They’re damaging the meteorological field”

The first strong reaction came from meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas, who, in a sharply worded post, said that “some are damaging the meteorological field” by predicting snowfall many days in advance.

He stressed that there is still no convergence among the main numerical weather models regarding precipitation—especially snow—adding that the only reliable forecast element at present is a temporary drop in temperatures from Sunday to Tuesday, followed by a return to seasonal levels.

Tsatrafyllias: Weather is not clickbait

Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias echoed similar concerns, openly criticizing exaggerated forecasts circulated for the sake of online traffic.

“Weather is not clickbait. Excessive ‘forecasts’ that are recycled uncritically are not information—they are misinformation,” he said, emphasizing that meteorology is based on data, not sensationalism, and that panic creates confusion rather than safety.

Marousakis responds; Ziakopoulou takes a cautious stance

Marousakis responded with a new post, standing by the term “polar outbreaks” and noting that one is already underway, without ruling out snowfall even over maritime areas.

Meteorologist Nikoleta Ziakopoulou adopted a more cautious tone, forecasting a new spell of severe weather from Saturday with heavy rain, gale-force southerly winds and falling temperatures. She refrained, however, from committing to snowfall predictions, saying pointedly: “Let’s see what kind of snow it actually brings.”
