This January, Greece is experiencing a noticeable increase in snow cover, with satellite data revealing that as of January 12, about 19% of the country’s land area is blanketed in snow — slightly above the average for this time of year.

After a relatively quiet start to winter with limited snowfall through December, the landscape began changing in late December. Then, following a powerful cold front that swept across the region after January 10, snow cover surged dramatically.

The most significant snowfall was seen in the mountainous and semi-mountainous zones of mainland Greece, but even lower-altitude areas in Macedonia and the islands of the Northern and Central Aegean weren’t spared.

While the 2025-2026 winter started off with below-average snow cover, current trends suggest a shift towards heavier snowfall. Meteorologists expect more snow in the coming days, especially in Greece’s higher elevations, offering winter enthusiasts and nature lovers a chance to enjoy more snowy landscapes.
