Two men, aged 52 and 50, are being held by the authorities in a case that points to the possibility of serial criminal activity, as they are accused—depending on their involvement—of intentional homicide committed jointly and repeatedly, as well as of aggravated rape. The 52-year-old is reported to have confessed, leading authorities to a basement building in Menemeni, Thessaloniki, which was revealed to be the scene of the crimes.

The basement building in Menemeni was exposed as a scene of horror, with the case coming to light on the night of Friday, January 30, on the television program “Fos sto Tounel” (Light in the Tunnel) hosted by Angeliki Nikolouli.

The first victim of the 52-year-old, who has confessed, was 46-year-old Maria Angelakoudi, who had been missing since early October. Her family reported her disappearance in Alexandroupoli. Shortly afterward, he admitted to police that on October 30, 2024, he murdered her in the basement where they were using drugs.

He became annoyed when she started shouting on the phone, covered her mouth, and strangled her to death. He then, together with his accomplice, threw her body into the trash.

“Fos sto Tounel” had even spoken with his family, while he himself had chosen to respond to calls from the program, appearing willing to “help.” When communication suddenly stopped, the program repeatedly tried to contact him again without success. Angeliki Nikolouli made a public appeal on air, after which he re-established contact.

The investigation took a dramatic turn when, on the rooftop of the same building, the body of a second woman was found, who had disappeared in the summer of 2025.

This was 43-year-old Evridiki (Vicky) Koutsaki, whose whereabouts had been unknown since July 2025. “Fos sto Tounel” had highlighted her mysterious disappearance, shedding light on the unknown background before her last sign of life. Regarding Vicky, the 52-year-old alleged perpetrator put forward a different claim, stating that the woman—also a drug user—died in her sleep while they were together in the basement. Instead of notifying the authorities, as he said, he transported and concealed her body on the building’s rooftop under blankets.

Testimonies from friends and relatives of the two women describe the pain and anger caused by the revelations. A friend of Maria, who had been hosting her during the last period, said: “Horror! What is her family supposed to bury now?…” Elsewhere he stated: “How must these people feel? What will they bury? Nothing? Isn’t he ashamed? The trigger was that she was shouting on the phone. It’s unbelievable… she was probably talking to me. I don’t know how to feel. I don’t know what they’ll do to him, but whatever they do, he deserves it. They found another woman dead too… this is audacity, and we don’t know what else he may have done. It’s unbelievable… he threw her in the trash and she was never found.”

He added: “I had never heard of him before. I don’t know him at all. First time I hear his name. She wouldn’t let me know her circles. No one ever came to pick her up from here. She must have met these people downtown.” Referring to the investigation, he said: “I had told the police back then, by name, everyone I knew, but they delayed a lot in starting the investigation. I had Maria’s belongings and was waiting for them to come get them and, of course, for me to give a statement since I was the last one living with her. It took seven months for the homicide division to get involved for an investigation to take place.” He concluded: “I even reached the point of wondering if I had harmed her myself. If something happened that I don’t remember. I can’t describe how hard this whole period was for me.”

A friend of Maria, also speaking on “Fos sto Tounel,” said: “We knew Maria was not alive… but we did not expect such a tragic end. I was devastated, mainly because I love her mother. It’s the worst thing a parent could hear… her child thrown in the trash? She was a very good girl. You asked her for one thing and she gave you ten. Whatever bad she did, she did only to herself…”

Regarding Vicky, a friend of hers said emotionally: “I didn’t know this place where she was found… She had told me that the perpetrator was an old friend of hers and that she met him by chance and they went for coffee. She mentioned that he had a big house that belonged to an aunt of his. I was surprised she went for coffee just like that with someone she didn’t really know well, and I told her so. When I learned she had been found, the only thing I thought was that her funeral should be done properly. That her little soul may rest… She won’t come back…”

The program also featured Vasso Chatzimanoli, president of the “Animal Shelter” association and a member of the five-member committee for the management of stray animals of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, referring to the effort to locate Vicky’s dog, Roza: “Unfortunately, I don’t know which family took her… They didn’t tell me… not a single detail, not a trace. Is it possible to take a dog and give it away so easily? There are procedures. Animals are fostered, checked for microchips, we wait to find the owner. It can’t be done like this. For the girl, the dog was family… it was her whole life. These practices tarnish the efforts of animal welfare organizations.”

“Fos sto Tounel” also visited the neighborhood of the alleged perpetrator, in an area near schools, where residents said they had noticed nothing suspicious. A neighbor stated: “We didn’t realize anything… no smell… no sign…” The case remains under full investigation, with authorities continuing inquiries into all the alleged acts.
