The group of Theravada Buddhist monks arrived in Washington, completing a 3,700-kilometer, 108-day journey from Fort Worth, Texas, with a central message of peace and meditation.
The 19 monks began their walk in October 2025 from the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana center in Texas. During their journey, they crossed several southern and eastern U.S. states, and their arrival in the nation’s capital was marked by crossing the Chain Bridge over the Potomac River, signaling the completion of the long trek.
The monks, dressed in saffron robes, have become consistent points of interest on social media, along with their rescue dog, Aloka. The mission was led by Bhikkhu Pannakara, who said the initiative aimed to raise awareness about peace and encourage the practice of Vipassana meditation. Throughout the journey, the monks’ silent procession attracted significant attention. Supporters gathered in towns and cities to witness their passage and express their support.
