A few kilometers outside Kozani, Nea Pontokomi is still a special example of a settlement created on paper to house an entire community, but in practice it is growing slowly.

Although in earlier publications it was described as “the smallest village in Greece”, as there was only one residence, today the picture has changed. According to a recent SKAI report, 13 houses have been erected, with four families living in them. The number remains extremely small compared to the original design, but the settlement is no longer the “village of one house.”

Nea Pontokomi was designed to relocate the old Pontokomi, which was expropriated due to the lignite activities of the Public Power Corporation (PPC). The new settlement has an approved urban plan and plots have been allocated to the beneficiaries, with provision for full residential and infrastructure development.

However, despite the gradual construction of housing, the overall picture remains unfinished. Problems that have been reported from time to time – such as delays in basic infrastructure, issues with networks and technical pending issues – continue to affect the full functioning of the settlement. The limited settlement of residents also reflects the slow transition from planning to actual settlement life.

Nea Pontokomi is an organized new settlement. Practically, however, it is a community still in the formation phase, with a minimal population and with infrastructure that is not fully completed.
