Kyranakis: From today the Tram arrives at Piraeus Port

The obstacle that kept the stop inactive was the coexistence of the overhead cables of the trolleybus network with the tram line at the same point

Newsroom February 18 02:45

The new terminal stop “Akti Poseidonos” of the Tram at Piraeus has been put into operation, fully activating the connection of Line 7 to the port and closing a years-long pending project that had been ongoing even though the project had been completed in terms of construction.

The obstacle keeping the stop inactive was not administrative but purely technical. The coexistence of the trolley network’s cables with the tramway alignment at the same location did not allow the line to operate safely and seamlessly.

The solution was provided by targeted dismantling of part of the overhead trolley network. Work began on 7 December 2025 from Piraeus, from an area with a particularly dense network that created multiple operational problems.

The intervention is part of a broader plan to streamline the transport network, as presented by Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis, based on a study by OASA.

Upon completion of the project, the trolley network will be reduced to 44 kilometers, a 70% reduction from the original 144 kilometers. The sections that will remain correspond mainly to long straights, where the remaining trolleybuses – which still have an operational lifetime – will be concentrated to run more frequent services.

According to the study data:

● For each trolley replacement with an electric bus, savings of more than 50% in operating costs are achieved.

● The cost of two new trolleybuses corresponds to three new electric buses.

● Savings of €20 million are foreseen from replacement and maintenance costs of the cable network.

Lines and routes are not being discontinued. They are now operated with electric buses, which gradually leads to an increase in the number of routes due to increased flexibility. At the same time, all employees continue their professional career at Odikes S.E. as usual.

Deputy Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis in a statement stresses “From today the Tram arrives at the Port of Piraeus, as I had committed. We solved a problem that kept a ready tram stop in abandonment, due to inconsistency of public services. A modern terminal had become a point of degradation, a hive of delinquent elements and a hotbed of pollution, without serving citizens to and from the port.

We stripped the cables that created the technical obstacle and the project was unblocked, satisfying a long-standing request of the citizens and personally of Mayor Yannis Moralis. As of today, the tramway will normally terminate at the port and will serve thousands of passengers, who will no longer be inconvenienced by carrying their suitcases through the streets of Piraeus.”
