U.S. President Donald Trump expressed the view that bilateral relations between Washington and Athens “have never been stronger” during the credential presentation ceremony of Greece’s new ambassador to the U.S., Antonis Alexandridis, at the White House.

According to reports, the U.S. President described Greece as a “valuable partner and ally” of the United States, noting that the level of bilateral relations is at its highest point in recent years. He stated that there are significant opportunities for further deepening cooperation in strategically important areas such as shipping, trade, energy, and investment.

He also expressed his tremendous admiration for Greece and mentioned that he wishes to visit the country.

Trump referred to Greece’s progress toward meeting NATO’s defense spending target of 5% of GDP, noting that Athens demonstrates a “real leadership presence” within the Alliance. “Peace is secured through strength,” he emphasized.

In the energy sector, he specifically mentioned U.S. liquefied natural gas exports and the so-called Vertical Corridor, noting that the relevant infrastructure projects would strengthen the broader region’s energy security.

At the same time, he expressed appreciation for the courage Greece showed by abstaining during the adoption, by the International Maritime Organization, of the zero-emissions framework. In this context, he referred to a regulation that, in his view, would have burdened consumers, businesses, and global trade.

He also touched on prospects for strengthening cooperation in the shipbuilding sector, including discussions on constructing American frigates in Greece, as well as expanding bilateral relations in trade and investment.

During the same meeting, Trump asked Alexandridis to convey “my warm regards” to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, underlining the importance of continuing close cooperation between the two governments.

The credential presentation ceremony officially marks the start of the new Greek ambassador’s tenure in Washington, at a time when Greek-American relations are characterized by enhanced strategic and economic significance.
