Contrasting weather ahead: Winter conditions in the Aegean – Spring-like temperatures in the Ionian

The first weather forecast for March

Newsroom February 26 12:23

Weather will show two contrasting “faces” in the coming days, according to meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis, who warns that while some areas will enjoy spring-like sunshine and mild temperatures, others will experience strong north winds and bitter cold.

In today’s (25.02.2026) social media update on the forecast, Marousakis noted that the Aegean Sea will see low temperatures and strong northerly winds, whereas the Ionian Sea will enjoy milder conditions, with sunshine and noticeably higher temperatures.

Meteorologists see a slight upward trend in temperature and limited phenomena in the coming days, while negative temperatures were recorded in mountainous areas of the country on the morning of Wednesday, February 25, 2026, with the lowest value of -3.1 degrees Celsius in Seli.

The outlook for Athens

In a post, meteorologist Thodoros Kolydas said that the meteorogram for Athens shows a period with small variations, without intense phenomena. As he notes, the cloudiness fluctuates, with periods of increased cloudiness mainly towards the middle of the period and again towards the end of the week, but without significant rainfall.

Precipitation remains at very low levels, with most scenarios giving zero or marginal amounts, and only towards the end of the season is there a slight chance of weak rain.

Winds are moving at mild to moderate intensities, around 2-4 m/s, with no evidence of strong episodes or gusty gusts. Temperatures are gently rising, with highs ranging from about 13 to 18 degrees Celsius and lows remaining in the single digits.

Overall, the weather points to a relatively calm, typically spring-like picture, with no significant changes.

Cold weather at the beginning of March and explanation for the ensembles

For his part, meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias says that “February bids us farewell with a little more chill,” adding that March will start with temperatures slightly below normal, but then for several days the mercury will move slightly above normal for the season. Precipitation, according to his analysis, is not expected to be significant.

He explains that the estimates are based on ensembles, i.e. the sum of multiple forecast scenarios for Athens, Thessaloniki and Heraklion. This is a forecasting system in which the same numerical model is “run” several times, with small variations in the initial atmospheric conditions.

As the atmosphere is a chaotic system, small differences in temperature, pressure, humidity and wind can lead to a different evolution after a few days. Thus, instead of a single forecast, several parallel runs (members) are used to capture the underlying trend, the range of possible scenarios and the level of uncertainty. The greater the convergence of scenarios, the greater the reliability of the forecast.

Fun on Wednesday morning

At the same time, according to the meteo.gr / National Observatory of Athens network of automatic weather stations, the lowest temperature on Wednesday morning, February 25, 2026, was recorded in Seli and was equal to -3.1°C. A table shows the eight stations with the lowest temperatures of the day.
