The case of the death of 67-year-old Maria Lada at Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos is taking on legal and institutional dimensions, as the competent authorities investigate whether the prescribed safety protocols were followed during her transfer and whether responsibilities arise for the tragic incident that occurred on Thursday, February 26, 2026.

The timeline of the tragedy
The 67-year-old, a passenger with disabilities from Kefalonia and a founding member of the Association for the Protection of Equality and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities “Yperion,” arrived in Athens to participate as a speaker at an international conference on rare diseases.

During the disembarkation process using a small service vehicle for passengers with reduced mobility, the ramp reportedly was not properly adjusted to the exit, leaving a gap. According to statements by the president of the “Yperion” Association, Sofia Maropoulou, citing information from the family, the driver of the vehicle attempted to assist her; however, “both of them fell together into the gap.”

Maria Lada was seriously injured in the chest. According to medical assessments cited by Ms. Maropoulou, she suffered internal bleeding.

Transfer to the hospital
The 67-year-old remained conscious during her transfer to the airport’s medical unit. As the Association’s president stated on the radio station COSMOS 96.5, when asked whether she wished the police to be called, she replied: “Let me first see about my health and then we’ll see.”

She was then transported by an ambulance of EKAB to G. Gennimatas General Hospital of Athens. Despite doctors’ efforts, she passed away a few hours later. The employee who was injured was also transferred for medical evaluation.

What is provided for the transport of passengers with disabilities and what the authorities are examining
The assistance of passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility at airports is governed by specific safety protocols, which include technical equipment checks, appropriate staff training, and the safe application of ramps and lifting mechanisms.

The competent authorities, in cooperation with the service provider, are examining:

  • whether the vehicle and the ramp were operating properly,
  • whether all prescribed safety measures were followed,
  • whether there was human error or technical malfunction,
  • what the exact conditions were at the moment of the fall.

In a statement, Athens International Airport expressed its condolences to the family of the 67-year-old and announced that an investigation process has already begun to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.

Intervention by the “Yperion” Association
The “Yperion” Association stresses that the tragic event “cannot be treated as just another accident,” publicly raising questions about the safety of infrastructure, the implementation of accessibility rules, and the accountability of the competent bodies.

At the same time, it is convening an extraordinary Board of Directors meeting to decide on further actions, support for the family, and the manner of her farewell, emphasizing that the fight for meaningful accessibility and safe mobility does not stop.

The case remains ongoing, while the central question remains whether the prescribed procedures were followed and who bears responsibility for an incident that dramatically highlighted safety issues in the transportation of persons with disabilities.
