Mitsotakis: ‘I call on benefactors to rise to the occasion and return part of their wealth to the homeland’ (updated)

The Stelios Hatzioannou Foundation donation event in support of Greece's public healthcare

Newsroom March 5 01:07

Athens, March 5, 2026 – Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis delivered a speech at an event celebrating the donation of the Stelios Hatzioannou Charitable Foundation to the National Health System (NHS). The donation aims to provide targeted financial support for doctors serving on small Greek islands, particularly those with populations under 4,000, during the winter months.

Mitsotakis highlighted the importance of strengthening healthcare access in remote areas, noting that doctors working on these islands face unique challenges due to isolation and limited resources. The foundation’s contribution is intended to alleviate some of these challenges by providing additional financial incentives to medical professionals serving in these communities.

During his speech, the Prime Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting healthcare workers across Greece and ensuring that citizens in all regions have access to high-quality medical care. “The dedication of our doctors, especially those serving in small islands, is extraordinary,” Mitsotakis said. “This donation not only recognizes their efforts but also reinforces our shared responsibility to safeguard public health across the country.”

The event was widely covered live by local media, including Protothema.gr, and attendees praised the collaboration between the public and private sectors in supporting Greece’s healthcare infrastructure.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy of enhancing medical services nationwide while incentivizing healthcare professionals to remain in underserved regions.
