Gunman who drove a car into a synagogue in Michigan dead, live coverage

No injuries were reported, the local sheriff said, while children who were inside the building were safely evacuated

Newsroom March 12 08:34

Police in West Bloomfield, Michigan were called on Thursday to respond to a gunman who opened fire at a synagogue. The attacker was killed after exchanging gunfire with security guards.

The local sheriff stated that there were no injuries.

Authorities say the act appears to have been intentional. It is not yet clear whether the attacker had accomplices.

Earlier Thursday afternoon, a car deliberately crashed into the Temple Israel synagogue, one of the largest in the United States.

Gunshots were heard immediately afterward, and the vehicle caught fire.

The gunman approached the guards, leading to an exchange of gunfire. According to the Associated Press, the attacker was killed by the guards’ gunfire.

The sheriff confirmed that everyone at the nearby school and daycare center was safely evacuated.

The Jewish Federation of Detroit urged Jewish institutions to lock down their facilities so that no one could enter or leave the buildings.

A strong police presence remains around the synagogue building.

FBI personnel are also at the scene, the agency’s director Kash Patel wrote on X. He confirmed that the car intentionally crashed into the building and that a shooting incident was underway.

The synagogue serves the Reform Jewish community and also operates a kindergarten. It is one of the largest Jewish communities in the United States, with around 3,000 members. For security reasons, the facility employs armed guards.
