Only a few days have passed since the arrest of a Georgian national in the same area who was also considered a suspect on similar charges, and today the scenario appeared to repeat itself. Notably, the man was staying at a hotel near the Souda naval base, and on February 16 he attempted to book a room at the same hotel where the Azeri man arrested in Chania last June on espionage charges—who remains in custody—had stayed.

According to reports, the suspect was allegedly photographing ships located at the base and sending the material to Poland. The accused was living in a camper van and, so far, denies all accusations. Police officers have already confiscated his mobile phone and other electronic devices, which are expected to undergo thorough examination.

As for the Georgian man arrested earlier this month, he denied the accusations but was tried for illegal entry and residence in the country, receiving a two-year prison sentence and a €5,000 fine. At the same time, the Counter-Terrorism Service has ordered a preliminary investigation to determine whether the offense of espionage can also be substantiated.
