Weather: Siberian invasion from Thursday with temperature drop and snow

Two phases of bad weather with rain, storms and strong northerly winds – What Tsatrafyllias and Kolydas forecast

Newsroom March 18 08:23

Significant changes in the weather are expected in the coming days, with two consecutive waves of bad weather, a drop in temperature and snowfall even in semi-mountainous areas, according to meteorologists Giorgos Tsatrafyllias and Thodoris Kolydas.

Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias, in a post, spoke of a “Siberian invasion from Thursday,” noting that the weather will show two different faces in the coming period, while the transport of Saharan dust will also be increased.

First phase of bad weather with rain and storms

Today, a low-pressure system in the Gulf of Sidra, named “Samuel,” is expected to bring light rain to the Ionian and mainland areas, as well as storms in the Cyclades and Crete.

At the same time, light snowfall will occur in mountainous areas, while temperatures will drop by 2–3 degrees. Winds will blow from east-northeast directions at up to 7 Beaufort.

Second wave with Siberian cold and snow

From Thursday to Saturday, conditions will worsen, as cold air masses from Siberia, combined with a new low-pressure system forming in the Ionian, will bring more rain and snowfall.

On Thursday, widespread rainfall is expected, more intense in western and southern Greece, while snowfall will be heavier in mountainous areas and temporarily affect semi-mountainous regions in the evening.

From Friday, phenomena will be mainly limited to the Aegean, especially Crete, while from Saturday they will weaken.

Northerly winds in the Aegean will intensify, reaching up to 8 Beaufort, while temperatures will drop further by 5–6 degrees. Frost is expected in mountainous areas, with maximum temperatures in Athens and Thessaloniki ranging between 13–14°C.

It is clarified that these changes are not considered extreme or unusual for the season.

Kolydas: Temperatures below normal

Meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas notes that the weather change has already begun, as the low-pressure system in the Gulf of Sidra is moving eastward, causing increased cloudiness and local rainfall.

According to him, the most intense phenomena are expected on Thursday and Friday, due to a new low-pressure system forming in the Ionian and moving eastward, strengthening northerly winds.

He emphasizes that temperatures from today until early next week will remain below normal for the season, with the coldest days being Thursday and Friday.

Today’s weather

Cloudiness is expected, with rainfall mainly in mainland areas (except Central and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace), the Central and Southern Aegean, and Crete. Snowfall will occur in mountainous mainland areas and locally in Western Macedonia until the morning. Storms are expected from midday in Crete, the Southern Aegean and southeastern Peloponnese. Dust concentrations in the atmosphere will be elevated.

Temperatures will range:

  • Western Macedonia: 0 to 10°C
  • Rest of Macedonia and Thrace: 2 to 15°C
  • Thessaly: 4 to 13°C
  • Epirus: 4 to 17°C
  • Central Greece and Peloponnese: 4 to 19°C
  • Ionian islands: 10 to 17°C
  • Northern and Eastern Aegean islands: 7 to 17°C
  • Cyclades: 12 to 16°C
  • Dodecanese: 14 to 17°C
  • Crete: 7 to 21°C

Winds in the Aegean will initially blow from eastern directions at 5–7 Beaufort, gradually turning northerly with the same intensity. In the Ionian, winds will be easterly at 4–6 Beaufort, temporarily turning northerly in the afternoon.

In Attica, cloudiness is expected with a chance of brief light rain mainly in the north. Winds will be northerly at 2–4 Beaufort, strengthening to 3–5 Beaufort. Dust levels will be elevated. Temperatures in central Athens will range from 11 to 17°C.

In Thessaloniki, cloudiness is expected. Winds will initially be easterly to southerly at 2–4 Beaufort, becoming variable later. Dust levels will be elevated. Temperatures will range from 7 to 14°C.
