Honoring freedom and democracy: American Hellenic Institute marks Greek Independence Day

Nick Larigakis highlights the enduring influence of Hellenic ideals and calls for vigilance in defending democracy and the rule of law

Newsroom March 26 11:10

On the occasion of the 205th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence, the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) issued a statement reflecting on the enduring legacy of Greece’s fight for freedom and its global significance. President Nick Larigakis paid tribute to the heroes who rose against Ottoman rule, emphasizing that their struggle marked a defining victory for liberty.

Larigakis underscored the profound impact of ancient Greek ideals on modern democracies, noting that the principles born in Ancient Greece continue to shape the foundations of Western political systems. These values, he stressed, are deeply embedded in the identity of the United States, forming the core of its Constitution and civil liberties.

As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence, Larigakis highlighted the unique pride felt by Greek Americans, whose heritage is intrinsically linked to the democratic ideals that inspired the nation’s founding. The Enlightenment principles that fueled the American Revolution also played a key role in inspiring the Greek struggle for independence, further strengthening the historical bond between the two nations.

Beyond commemoration, the statement looks toward the future, emphasizing the importance of maintaining and strengthening the strategic partnership between the United States and Greece. Initiatives such as the U.S.–Greece Strategic Dialogue were cited as vital frameworks for ensuring continued cooperation and shared progress.

At the same time, Larigakis issued a broader call to defend democracy and the rule of law in an increasingly complex global landscape. He warned that these foundational principles face ongoing challenges and must be actively protected to prevent their erosion. The stability of the international order, he argued, depends on consistent adherence to these values.

Christos Megalou: If Piraeus Bank proceeds with acquisitions, they will be within Greece

Addressing current geopolitical tensions, the AHI president pointed to concerns in the Eastern Mediterranean, stressing the need for accountability and the consistent application of international law. He emphasized that lasting peace and stability require firm commitment from the United States and its allies, particularly in regions of strategic importance.

Concluding his remarks, Larigakis called on the community to remain engaged, informed, and proactive in advocating for policies that uphold democratic values. Greek Independence Day, he noted, is not only a celebration of the past but also a reminder of the ongoing responsibility to safeguard freedom for future generations.

As the world continues to navigate new challenges, the message remains clear: the ideals that gave rise to democracy must be defended—consistently, collectively, and without compromise.
