The security of the Middle East cannot be treated as a foreign issue to Europe

The joint meeting between European leaders and leaders from countries in the region concluded in Nicosia, as part of the informal European Council summit held in Cyprus, delivering a clear message: the security of the Middle East cannot be treated as a foreign issue for Europe

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that discussions focused on finding solutions, with diplomacy remaining at the forefront. He emphasized that the security of the Gulf region is also Europe’s security, noting that the meeting highlighted two key elements: a shared understanding of risks and a common will to address challenges.

Costa: Diplomacy is the only sustainable path

The President of the European Council, António Costa, pointed out that the situation in the Middle East is worsening day by day. He stressed that the European Union stands by the affected states and their peoples, placing particular emphasis on respect for international law and stating that diplomacy is the only viable path forward.

von der Leyen: Not just crisis management

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, welcomed ceasefire agreements but noted that temporary arrangements are not enough and that the goal must be lasting peace.

Her message was that Europe does not see the countries of the region merely as partners in crisis management, but also as partners for the future. As she noted, Europe’s security is inextricably linked to the security of the region—a geographical reality Europe has finally remembered without needing a map and three committees.

The President of Syria, Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa, spoke about the need for political maturity, noting that Syria bears responsibilities but is also heavily impacted by the ongoing instability.

He stated that “Syria needs Europe and Europe needs Syria,” calling for European intervention in response to Israeli strikes on Syrian territory. His presence at the Cyprus summit had already been confirmed by international media.
