Greece has been left in shock by the news of the two 17-year-old girls who jumped from the rooftop of a six-story apartment building in Ilioupoli. One died instantly, while the second is hospitalized at KAT Hospital in critical condition, fighting for her life.

According to police sources speaking to protothema.gr, the two friends made the fatal decision together after consuming vodka. They wrote notes explaining the reasons that led them there, went up to the rooftop of the apartment building, locked the door, put on headphones and listened to music, then jumped hand-in-hand.

“I have depression, I’m afraid I will disappoint my parents in the national exams”

Initially, a note was found in the bag of the girl who lost her life and who lived in the apartment building. Among other things, according to the same information, she wrote that she suffers from depression, that she loves her parents, and that they are not to blame for anything. She also mentioned that she believed she would disappoint them because she would not succeed in the Panhellenic exams. “I don’t want to live in this world,” the note concluded.

Information also states that police found a diary in the home of the other 17-year-old who is fighting for her life. She too reportedly wrote that she suffers from depression and fears disappointing her parents because of the national exams. The two girls were friends and — according to the evidence — had planned their suicide in advance.

The 17-year-old’s condition is extremely critical

The condition of the 17-year-old is considered extremely critical and she will undergo surgery. According to the director of Asklepieio Hospital in Voula, Aimilios Vougiouklakis, at 12:30 p.m. the two minors were transferred by EKAB ambulances to the hospital’s emergency department, where despite doctors’ efforts for more than an hour, one of the girls died.

A preliminary investigation into the case is being conducted by the Ilioupoli Police Department.

Eyewitness account shocks

A man who owns a shop next to the location of the incident described what happened:

“I heard screams and then a loud bang. I turned my head and saw the two girls. I called EKAB and the emergency police. The ambulance came very quickly indeed, but until it arrived I stayed near the girl who was breathing and spoke to her, trying to give her strength to stay conscious.

A woman came down from the first floor, approached one of the girls and saw that she was breathing. Then another young man came down saying he was that girl’s brother,” he said, visibly shocked.

“They asked for the rooftop keys and within seconds they jumped”

According to a neighbor’s testimony, shortly before the incident the two girls asked the building manager for the rooftop keys, and within seconds a loud noise from their fall was heard.

According to the same testimony, shortly before the incident the two 17-year-olds reportedly asked the apartment building manager for the rooftop keys. “My friend told her, ‘they’re where the keys always are, where we keep them.’ She didn’t even manage to take five steps before hearing the bang — the girls had fallen from the rooftop,” she said.

She added that no one could have imagined what was about to happen. “How could she possibly imagine why they wanted the keys? She could never have imagined such a tragic event,” she said.
