Protothema will join Google‘s commercial Al pilot program, marking the first Greek publisher to participate in this initiative. The program is aimed at exploring how Al can drive deeper audience engagement and support high-quality journalism.
Under the agreement, Protothema’s real-time journalistic content will be used for Google News Al experiences and the Gemini app, providing users with more accurate, up-to-date information. The pilot program focuses on testing experimental, Al-driven features designed to meet the evolving habits of readers.
Protothema joins alongside a range of global news publishers—including Der Spiegel, Financial Times, El País, Folha de S.Paulo, Infobae, Kompas, The Guardian, The Times of India, The Washington Examiner, and The Washington Post, among others-to explore how Al can help cultivate highly engaged audiences.
Key features of the collaboration:
- As part of this new commercial pilot program, Google will be working with Protothema to experiment with new features in Google News and the Gemini app.
- Protothema’s publications will provide content for Google News and Gemini App as well as to its continuous flow of journalistic articles to provide more accurate, up-to-date information to the publications’ readers, driving deeper audience engagement.
- Google News will test Al-generated overviews on participating publications’ pages, providing readers with quick context before they click through to the full story
· The program is also experimenting with making news available in different formats for those who prefer consuming news in other ways. - These experimental Al features will all include clear attribution and direct links to the original articles.
