A trip that had been planned as a celebration before her wedding turned into a tragedy for 37-year-old Italian Sara Ceccantini, who passed away at the Hospital of Syros, where she had been receiving treatment after a serious road accident that occurred two days earlier in Mykonos.
The unfortunate woman had traveled to the island with friends for her bachelorette party, as she was due to get married in just a few weeks. No one could have imagined that the holiday would turn into a nightmare.
According to reports, the accident occurred on a main road on the island, near Xtreme Gyros. The car carrying the Italian women was traveling in the right lane when the driver attempted to make a left turn, crossing the opposite lane of traffic. At that moment, a passenger car driven by a Greek national was approaching from the opposite direction.
The collision was unavoidable. The second vehicle struck the rear right side of the Italians’ car with great force—precisely where the 37-year-old was seated.
Sara Ceccantini absorbed the full impact of the crash and suffered severe injuries. Scenes of panic followed, as emergency responders and police rushed to the scene.
She was initially taken to the Mykonos Health Center and was later airlifted to the Hospital of Syros, where doctors fought to keep her alive.
Despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries today, plunging her family, friends, and colleagues in Italy into mourning.
The preliminary investigation found no evidence of alcohol consumption by either driver, as all relevant tests were negative. Authorities continue to examine all aspects of the accident in order to fully clarify the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision that cut short the life of the 37-year-old Italian woman.
