New details have emerged in the case of the man of Egyptian origin who was arrested at midday on Saturday (25/7) in Athens while in possession of a hand grenade. According to reports, the intended target was the former Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Isidoros Dogiakos.

According to the latest information, the alleged mastermind is an Egyptian serving a life sentence, who is being held at Diavata Prison and has been incarcerated since 2017.

According to the same sources, the life-sentenced inmate had been convicted of homicide, and his criminal record also includes robberies. He is also alleged to have been involved in other offenses during his imprisonment.

Police arrested the Egyptian man immediately after he received the grenade, before he had the opportunity to carry out any further actions.

As part of the investigation, authorities also searched the home of the Greek man who allegedly handed over the grenade. There, they found a revolver and €4,000 in cash, although the man himself was not present.

According to the same sources, the man had been released from prison under restrictive conditions and is currently being sought by the authorities. Reports also indicate that he had previously been involved in a drug-related case.

The Greek FBI had received intelligence that the foreign national was about to take possession of the grenade. He was immediately placed under covert surveillance and was ultimately arrested shortly after receiving it. According to the same sources, the grenade is believed to have been picked up in the southern suburbs of Attica.

Police are also reported to have informed the former Prosecutor of the Supreme Court as early as last Tuesday about intelligence indicating a planned attack on his home, and for that reason they advised him to leave the residence.
