Endless disruption at Athens Airport: Delays of up to an hour and a half have become the norm – see photos

Hundreds of passengers are crowding the departure halls at Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) – As passenger traffic increases, so do delays in both departures and arrivals

The disruption at Athens Airport shows no sign of easing, as delays have now effectively become the norm for both departing and arriving flights. The increase in passenger traffic has inevitably led to longer delays, as the capacity to manage air traffic within Greek airspace is limited, and despite ongoing efforts, the problem has not been adequately addressed.

It is indicative that between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., not a single flight departed on time, with even the shortest delay amounting to 15 minutes. Most flights, however, took off about an hour later than scheduled. In some cases, such as the flight to Haifa, which was due to depart at 6:05 p.m., passengers had to wait until 7:52 p.m. before takeoff.

The same picture is evident with arrivals, as aircraft departing Athens late also return behind schedule. Meanwhile, the departure halls are packed to capacity, as the flow of travelers is no longer moving smoothly.
