In light of the wildfire season and the fires being recorded in various parts of the country, the Ministry of Health is reminding the public of health protection measures through a circular issued five days ago by Alternate Health Minister Eirini Agapidaki.
The circular notes that smoke from wildfires contains hazardous air pollutants, such as particulate matter, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, which can cause both short-term and long-term health effects.
Older adults, children, pregnant women, smokers, and people suffering from asthma, chronic respiratory diseases or cardiovascular conditions are considered particularly vulnerable. Exposure to smoke may cause irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract, coughing, shortness of breath and asthma attacks, while in severe cases it may even lead to cardiovascular events.
