The United States embassy in Jerusalem has issued a new security warning to American citizens in Israel, urging them to remain on high alert amid a rapidly evolving security situation in the region.

The notice states that “owing to heightened tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex, with the potential for unpredictable escalation”.

“Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise caution and heightened vigilance, and should be prepared for flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures and possible travel disruptions. Some airlines in the region have postponed resuming previously suspended routes, while others have cancelled certain flights.”

“Americans in the region should consider departing or be prepared to do so should the situation escalate. Americans outside the Middle East should seriously reconsider travel to and through the region. Those travelling to or from the area should monitor information on airport and airline operations. US diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, have been targeted. Iran and Iran-aligned groups may target other American interests abroad, or locations linked to the United States and to Americans worldwide, including US businesses and other institutions.”

“The situation in the Middle East remains fluid. The Iranian regime is unpredictable, as shown by its recent decisions to strike areas in the region without warning or provocation, and to extend attacks to areas not previously targeted, such as Egypt. Americans should remain vigilant, as the fact that US interests or operations have not previously been attacked in a given country does not guarantee their safety,” the statement concludes.

On 27 February 2026, the State Department approved the departure of non-essential staff and family members of US diplomatic mission personnel in Israel, citing security risks.
