From August 12 to 24, the island of Patmos will host “PNEVMA,” the first international exhibition of paintings by British artist Norman Hyams since his death in the autumn of 2024.

Organized by the Hannah Barry Gallery in collaboration with The Patmos Trust, the exhibition will be held at the Stavrakas Mansion in Chora, Patmos, with free admission for the public.

The exhibition follows the 2025 London presentation “No Rush” and marks the first time a substantial body of Hyams’ work has been exhibited outside the United Kingdom. Many of the paintings were selected directly from the artist’s London studio and are being shown to the public for the first time.

At the heart of the exhibition are Patmos, the Dodecanese islands, and the Aegean Sea—subjects that fascinated Hyams for many years. His paintings depict the island landscape through both realistic and abstract compositions. He was also known for painting on unconventional surfaces, including old paint palettes, fruit crates, sponges, and plates, transforming everyday objects into unique artistic canvases.

The exhibition’s title, “PNEVMA,” was chosen by the artist’s wife, Sacha Hyams. Derived from the ancient Greek word meaning “breath” or “spirit,” it symbolizes the vital energy that, according to the organizers, permeates Hyams’ work. Patmos held a special place in the family’s life, serving as their regular summer retreat, with the island’s landscapes and daily experiences becoming an enduring source of artistic inspiration.

Spread across the four rooms of Stavrakas Mansion, the exhibition explores both the natural world and the artist’s inner landscape. Among the highlights is the recurring image of a solitary diver, depicted alone in the sea, as well as a series of paintings inspired by Kastellorizo. Although Hyams never visited the remote Greek island, he came to know it through stories shared by his family.

Norman Hyams was born in 1966 and lived and worked in London. A graduate of the Chelsea College of Art, his work is included in major collections, including the UK Government Art Collection. Throughout his career, he held numerous solo and group exhibitions in London and across Europe, leaving behind a distinctive body of work characterized by its exploration of landscape, memory, and observation.

The exhibition will be open daily from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. through August 24.
