The Kalochori Wetland has taken on a markedly different and deeply concerning appearance in recent weeks, as a prolonged period of drought has caused water levels to drop significantly and the wetland’s flooded areas to shrink.

The landscape of the lagoon—one of the most important coastal wetlands in northern Greece—has changed dramatically, with the effects of the lack of rainfall and extreme temperatures now clearly visible.

Located just 8 kilometers from Thessaloniki, the Kalochori Lagoon is a true biodiversity hotspot, serving as the northern gateway to the Axios Delta National Park. The area supports significant bird populations and is an important stopover site for many migratory species.
