Elon Musk attacked the candidate for the presidency of France Marine Tondelier, the leader of the Greens party, who stated that the French authorities should have the possibility to suspend the operation of the platform during election campaigns, in the event of “foreign interference“.
“I demand that she be shut down for treason against France!” wrote Musk on X, provoking a strong reaction from Tondelier.
“France does not need lessons in patriotism from a foreign billionaire,” she replied.
She even added that “I prefer to be accused of defending democracy rather than of trying to buy it.”
Musk regularly comments on European politics and supports conservative right-wing candidates and parties.
In July, Musk stated that the right-wing candidate for the presidency, Marine Le Pen, was “France’s last hope”.
The far-left presidential candidate, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, also condemned Musk’s attacks against Tondelier, while accusing the French government of not “doing enough” to combat “foreign interference”.
A few days ago the French prime minister Sébastien Lecornu had stated that the government is intensifying its efforts to detect and punish “foreign interferences” in the upcoming elections of 2027. The presidential candidates Gabriel Attal and Édouard Philippe, as well as the possible candidate Raphaël Glucksmann, stated that they had fallen victim to Russian disinformation campaigns.
