Athenian democracy would not have existed without sponsorship and without the trierarchy. This tradition has continued through the centuries in the form of national benefaction—that is, the contribution of people who have succeeded in life and have chosen to support their country at critical moments. Donations are a tangible expression of support for the vision of a strong homeland.”

Dendias has also stressed that “what is extremely important is not only the act of giving, but above all the example it sets.”

Requests for donations to the Armed Forces are handled by the Donations Acceptance Department of the Ministry of National Defence, which coordinates the parties involved as well as the procedures for utilizing and distributing the donations.
