A serious incident occurred at a beach in Chania, when a 45-year-old man suffered a severe neck injury while playing in the sea with his young niece. The man sustained a cervical vertebra fracture with spinal cord injury, underwent surgery, and remains under close medical observation.

The incident occurred two days ago, when the 45-year-old was at a beach in Chania with his niece and the two decided to play in the water.

According to information from neakriti.gr, at one point the man placed the young girl on his shoulders so she could dive into the sea. However, the child reportedly lost her balance and, instead of falling into the water, landed heavily on the man’s neck.

The impact proved extremely serious. The man lost his balance and collapsed into the water, having suffered a cervical vertebra fracture, while the injury also affected his spinal cord.

The 45-year-old was initially taken to Chania Hospital. However, because of the seriousness of his condition, doctors determined that he needed to be transferred to Venizeleio Hospital in Heraklion. Doctors there decided that he needed immediate surgery. According to reports, a specialized implant had to be urgently transported from Athens for the operation.

The 45-year-old underwent surgery by the neurosurgeons at Venizeleio Hospital. The medical team sought to stabilize the injury and reduce the risk of serious neurological complications.

The first hours following the operation initially brought encouraging signs, as the 45-year-old was able to move his arms. However, according to the latest information, his condition subsequently changed, and today he was not showing the same degree of movement in his upper limbs.

This continues to concern doctors, as the severity of the injury and the progression of his neurological condition require constant monitoring. Despite the seriousness of the incident, the medical team remains cautiously optimistic, believing there is potential for significant improvement.

The 45-year-old remains under close medical supervision, with the coming period considered critical for his recovery.

Doctors are continuing efforts to minimize the effects of the spinal cord injury and determine whether his mobility can be restored.
