Nicole Kidman looked back on the day she won an Oscar in 2003, recalling that although she was at the peak of her career, she felt an overwhelming sense of loneliness.

The 59-year-old actress, who won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in The Hours, admitted during Thursday’s, September 10, episode of the Therapuss podcast: “I was incredibly lonely. I was at the peak of my success and I came home and felt so alone.”

Kidman continued: “So, yeah, it’s crazy how all these events come together and make you think, ‘I wish…’. I had my mother and father with me, but I was thinking, ‘Where is my partner, someone I can share this with?’ It was one of the most profound moments when I thought, ‘I need to build my life,’ at the same time as I was holding this golden statuette. I was thinking, ‘This is it. This is the biggest award you can win in our industry.’ I was so grateful and, at the same time, so alone.”

When asked what single word would describe her mood during that period, the actress replied: “Strange. That’s how I felt. I just wanted, you know, to be in someone’s arms at that moment. I wanted to have something around me that would make me feel, ‘Okay, this is my real life.’”

Two years before winning the Oscar, in 2001, Nicole Kidman divorced her first husband, Tom Cruise, whom she had married in 1990.
