George Mazonakis’s funeral service will be held at 1pm at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Nikaia, for the singer who died aged 54 in circumstances being investigated at the Stem Cell clinic in Kolonaki.

Following the funeral, George Mazonakis will be buried at the Third Cemetery in Nikaia in the presence of close family members.

“Your absence weighed heavily on me” rang out from the loudspeakers as everyone sang along loudly on Sunday afternoon in Nikaia, waiting for George Mazonakis “to return to his old neighbourhood”, “to the bench where he had written down his dreams”… And on this final return, he was surrounded by thousands of people who had hurried to return the love he had so generously given them for more than three decades through his melodies, performances, moments, memories and care.

Scenes reminiscent of an ancient tragedy unfolded on Sunday afternoon when George Mazonakis’s body arrived at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Nikaia.

The singer’s two sisters, Maria and Vaso, his mother and his father, all in tears and still unwilling to part with him, tried to approach and touch the coffin, while security at the venue discreetly kept them a little further away.

George Mazonakis’s lawyer, Charalambos Lykoudis, calls for prosecution for homicide

“When you carry out a dangerous procedure that you know is illegal, as the legislator has determined when it is performed by an unqualified doctor, and you proceed to carry it out under these circumstances, you accept the possibility of taking a life, and that is the definition of conditional intent. I hope the prosecution will move in this direction.”

The Attica Traffic Police Directorate/GADA announces that, due to the forthcoming funeral service for George Mazonakis at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Nikaia, followed by his burial at the Third Cemetery of the Municipality of Athens, emergency traffic measures have been put in place to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and the safety of citizens.

Until both ceremonies have been completed, police forces have been deployed to prevent vehicles from passing around the Church of the Holy Trinity in Nikaia.

In addition, from 10am until the end of both ceremonies, traffic will be partially restricted in both directions on Chrysostomou Smyrnis Street, along the section between Petrou Ralli Avenue and Grigoriou Lambraki Avenue.

The public farewell for George Mazonakis will end at noon, as preparations must be made for the funeral service to begin at 1pm.
