Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying program (MAID) is again facing scrutiny after the family of Brigitte Stegemann alleged the 83-year-old Christian grandmother was euthanized without valid final consent. Stegemann, who had stage 4 stomach cancer, died by lethal injection on July 10, 2026, at The Pearl care home in Cannifton, Ontario.

Her granddaughter and power of attorney, Brigitte Kranendonk, says Stegemann had previously rejected MAID on religious grounds. While Kranendonk was away, staff initiated assessments. A cognitive test reportedly showed Stegemann could not answer basic family questions. Two days before the procedure she wept for 45 minutes and said she had “made a mistake.” On the morning of her death, a nurse struggled to insert an IV, leaving blood on her arm, nightgown, pillow and sheets. When the doctor asked about giving “medicine,” Stegemann did not speak, nod or open her eyes. Her hands were clasped in prayer. The doctor proceeded anyway. She was pronounced dead within minutes.

The home maintains legal consent was obtained. Belleville police have opened a criminal investigation. The family has asked Ontario’s chief coroner to review the case.

The episode highlights deeper problems with Canada’s MAID regime. Legalized in 2016 and repeatedly expanded, the program now accounts for more than 5 percent of all deaths! In 2024 alone, 16,499 people died by MAID. Critics argue eligibility and capacity checks have become too loose, leaving elderly, cognitively impaired and socially isolated patients exposed. Track 2 cases – people whose natural death is not reasonably foreseeable, including such as homeless and unemployed – have grown even as safeguards remain contested.

What began as a tightly limited option for the terminally ill now operates at industrial scale. Families say vulnerable patients can be steered toward death rather than supported through illness. Stegemann’s case, still under investigation, has become a grim illustration of how far the system has drifted from its original promise of last-resort choice.
