The crucial general assembly of the EuroLeague teams is currently underway, with the clubs having gathered since yesterday afternoon in Cernobbio, on the shores of Lake Como in Italy.
Although the league has officially provided no information, leaks from the NBA side about the ultimatum it has issued, along with its demand that the league not proceed with an expansion of the number of teams, have evidently prompted a first… reaction.
Thus, information coming from northern Italy indicates that the majority of the teams are opposed to the NBA’s proposal, as they believe that, essentially, the Americans want them to hand over the keys to European basketball and become its absolute bosses.
“It is a bad proposal, and there is no way we are going to both pay money and hand over governance of the sport,” was roughly the gist of the arguments heard, while many suggested making a counterproposal to the Americans in order to begin negotiations.
As for increasing the number of teams through the addition of eight new franchises, the picture remains unclear. Although everyone is in favor, the feeling is that this should happen gradually and with the interests of the 13 clubs that are the competition’s original shareholders being protected.
