Air arrivals in Mykonos rise 5.6% in 2026, as private jets and short-term rentals gain ground

Tourism in Mykonos is on a positive trajectory in 2026, with air arrivals increasing, the private aviation market maintaining its momentum and short-term rentals showing encouraging prospects.

At the same time, the island remains one of Greece’s most recognisable luxury tourism destinations, maintaining a strong presence in international markets.

These findings are outlined in a summary report on tourism activity and accommodation published on October 9 by Mykonos Promo, bringing together data and estimates from tourism bodies and market research. According to the available figures, a total of 780,385 passenger arrivals were recorded at Mykonos Airport between January 1 and September 30, 2026, representing a 5.6% increase compared with the same period last year.

This development is a positive indication of the continued demand for the popular Cycladic destination, at a time when competition among Mediterranean tourism markets remains particularly intense. Despite periodic discussions about the island’s tourism performance, air arrival figures indicate that Mykonos continues to attract significant numbers of travellers.

The figures for private aircraft arrivals are also noteworthy, as this segment is closely associated with the high-end tourism market. During the first nine months of 2026, private aircraft arrivals at Mykonos Airport increased by 1.7%, with the number of passengers travelling on these aircraft reaching 5,089. Private aviation has long been a characteristic feature of the island’s tourism identity, attracting businesspeople, affluent visitors and travellers seeking luxury hospitality services.

Projections for the short-term rental accommodation market are particularly positive. In recent years, this sector has become an important component of Mykonos’ tourism offering. According to research by STAMA Greece, occupancy rates for these properties are expected to increase by approximately 21% compared with the 2025 season, while average nightly rates are projected to rise by 7%. The average length of stay in short-term rental accommodation is estimated at seven to eight nights.

These figures highlight the growing importance of this market to the island, as some visitors opt for private homes, apartments and luxury villas. Rising demand for such accommodation creates new opportunities for property owners and managers, while also intensifying competition with traditional hotels. However, the report notes that the STAMA Greece survey does not include a detailed presentation of its methodology or data quality, making a cautious interpretation of its estimates necessary.

Another notable finding concerns Mykonos’ international reputation as a luxury holiday destination. As part of a survey conducted by partners of the New York Tourism Advisory Group for the Mykonos Promo programme, more than 450 luxury travel agency professionals were asked to identify Greek destinations they considered suitable for luxury holidays. According to the results, all participants recognised Mykonos as a luxury destination.

The survey covered major North American markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Washington, Boston, San Francisco and Toronto. Following Mykonos, respondents mentioned Corfu, Rhodes, Santorini, Crete and Athens. The finding reflects the island’s strong recognition among luxury travel professionals, although it does not constitute an overall ranking of Greek destinations based on actual arrivals or economic performance.

The US market is particularly important for Mykonos, as American visitors are among the traveller groups with high per-capita expenditure. According to Bank of Greece data, arrivals of American travellers in Greece fell by 8.2% between January and July 2026, reaching approximately 829,900. Despite this decline, travel receipts from the same market increased by 7.9%, reaching €1.063 billion. This indicates that although fewer Americans visited Greece, their overall spending was higher.

In this context, the Mykonos Promo programme places particular emphasis on attracting visitors from the United States, as well as Gulf countries such as Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Latin America is also among the target markets, with the region considered to offer significant growth potential in international travel.

Mykonos’ performance comes in a year when Greek tourism overall is following an upward trajectory. During the first seven months of 2026, inbound travel to Greece reached 20.04 million travellers, compared with 18.45 million during the same period in 2025. Travel receipts increased even more significantly, rising by 12% to €13.52 billion. Meanwhile, the nationwide average hotel room occupancy rate reached 83.4% in July, up from 82.4% in the same month of 2025, while the average room rate increased from €168 to €190.

Despite the positive picture reflected in arrival figures, the overall economic performance of Mykonos’ tourism season remains a question requiring further investigation. This is because visitor numbers are not the only measure of a successful tourism season. Equally important are how much travellers spend, how long they stay and the extent to which tourism activity benefits the local economy.

An increase in arrivals may be accompanied by lower average spending or changes in visitors’ travel habits, directly affecting business revenues. In Mykonos, where tourism operating costs and expectations for high-end services are particularly high, the season’s financial performance takes on even greater significance.

The report itself notes that sufficient data is not yet available to draw firm conclusions about the overall economic performance of the current season. Consequently, the 5.6% increase in air arrivals is a clear indication of stronger passenger traffic, but it does not prove that businesses on the island recorded a corresponding increase in turnover.

In any case, the available figures indicate that Mykonos continues to hold a strong position on the international tourism map, attracting significant numbers of visitors and maintaining its reputation as a luxury holiday destination. The major challenge in the coming years will not simply be to increase arrivals, but above all to translate the island’s international recognition into tangible economic benefits, while preserving the quality of its services and the characteristics that established its place on the global tourism map.
