Emergency crews and repair teams are continuing efforts to restore electricity in Taiwan after Typhoon Chambi battered the island, leaving one person dead, more than 500 injured and tens of thousands of households without power. The storm has since moved away from Taiwan and is heading towards China and Japan, where authorities have issued warnings and taken precautionary measures.

More than 56,000 households in Taiwan remained without electricity as emergency workers struggled to repair damaged power lines and restore essential services.

Over 5,000 people were evacuated from their homes before the typhoon arrived. The powerful winds uprooted trees, brought down electricity lines and triggered flash flooding in several areas.

Nearly 240 millimetres of rain fell in Miaoli County, in western Taiwan, as the storm continued to affect the island.

One person has died and more than 500 others have been injured since Thursday, when the Taiwanese government began issuing emergency warnings ahead of the typhoon’s arrival.

Chambi was briefly classified as a super typhoon while over the ocean, with winds reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h, before gradually weakening.

According to the latest advisory from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, its maximum winds have since fallen to 176 km/h.

In China, several railway services were suspended and tens of thousands of residents were evacuated from their homes in Shanghai as authorities prepared for the approaching storm.

Chinese state media warned of heavy to torrential rainfall across parts of Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, Shanghai and other areas.

BREAKING: Typhoon Champi leaves 1 dead, 94 injured in Taiwan. Over 77,000 homes lost power, with 19,029 still dark as of 2 PM. Nearly 1,000 flights cancelled; 1,286 evacuated. Waves up to 8 meters batter Taitung coast. https://t.co/5sEOKGs5LZ

Japan has also experienced significant disruption, with dozens of flights cancelled across the region, particularly in Okinawa Prefecture. Japanese authorities reported two people injured as a result of the typhoon.

Chambi is the latest in a series of powerful typhoons to strike the Pacific during an exceptionally active storm season. The unusually intense conditions have been linked to El Niño, with scientists reporting unprecedented warming of equatorial Pacific waters this year.

The typhoon has now moved away from Taiwan and was last reported to be approximately 150 kilometres east of the island.
