Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis declared that Greece is a force for peace that neither resorts to blackmail nor yields to it, and neither threatens others nor accepts threats, in a statement following the military parade in Thessaloniki marking the national anniversary of 28 October.

Mitsotakis emphasised the importance of maintaining strong national defences, highlighting the innovative weapons systems displayed during the Oxi Day parade and the investment being made in the country’s Armed Forces.

Freedom and peace must never be taken for granted

“In the turbulent times we live in, 28 October always reminds us that freedom and peace must never be taken for granted,” the prime minister said.

“These are values that were won through the sacrifices of a generation that stood up against fascism and Nazism. Their legacy serves as a compass of responsibility for us – a responsibility we fulfil through actions, not words.”

Mitsotakis went on to highlight the scale of Greece’s military modernisation programme and the advanced defence technology showcased during the parade.

“The Armed Forces are currently implementing the largest armament programme in their history. I believe that all Greek women and men, and particularly the people of Thessaloniki, had the opportunity to witness a parade in which innovative systems stood out, enabling us to demonstrate strong deterrent capabilities against those who might seek to challenge our sovereignty or sovereign rights.”

Greece neither threatens nor accepts threats

Reiterating Greece’s position on regional security and national sovereignty, Mitsotakis stressed that the country’s military capabilities are intended to provide deterrence rather than serve as instruments of intimidation.

“I have said this many times, and I repeat it: Greece is a force for peace. It does not resort to blackmail, nor does it yield to blackmail. It does not threaten, nor does it accept threats.”

The prime minister also underlined that Greece’s defence investments are being financed through the contributions and sacrifices of its citizens.

“What is particularly important to emphasise today is that all these weapons systems we are seeing are funded through the sacrifices of the Greek people,” he said.

“Without a prosperous economy and without economic stability, no country can project strong deterrent power.”

Concluding his statement, Mitsotakis extended his wishes to Greeks across the country on the national anniversary.

“Once again, I would like to wish all Greek women and men a happy 28 October.”
