6 Greek islands ideal for climbing

Tall rocks, stunning views, and great thrills in the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, and Crete

The Greek islands are associated with lazy summer holidays, swimming on their beaches and playing water sports, but there are other activities we can do on the islands, like climbing.

Most islands are suitable for climbing, some with many routes at various climbing fields, and some with fewer options. Whether you want a view of the sea, or climbing in the mainland, are a skilled climber or are just starting out, Greek islands have routes for everyone.

Kalymnos
Kalymnos is probably the most famous climbing island in Greece. In 1996, the Italian Andrea di Barri visited Kalymnos and realised the island’s climbing potential on the limestone rock formations. The next year, he returned to the island with his friends and they created the first climbing routes. Today, Kalymnos is famous both within and outside Greece, for its climbing fields that include about 3,000 secure, marked climbing routes for every level, attracting thousands of climbing aficionados from around the world.
