Outgoing Parliament President Zoe Konstantopoulou called a press conference on Sunday night, simultaneously to Radical Left Coalition leader Alexist Tsipras’ address in Thessaloniki. She held the conference to respond to comments made by Independent Greeks (ANEL) head Panos Kammenos who accused her of watering down her efforts to combat corruption. He had stated that she had not presented specific cases for discussion at the Plenary as she had been obliged to do.
The former speaker accused Kammenos, along with former PM Alexis Tsipras and former state minister Nick Pappas of using the media to bring about the political deaths of their opponents. She states that Kammenos’ comments against her were part of Kammenos’ efforts to bring about her own political assassination.
The purpose of the press conference was to clarify accusations linking her to cases of corruption that target her political reputation. She invited those interested to seek through files to find her ancestors but they would not find any skeletons in her closet.
