The Global AgeWatch Index is a snapshot of how the world’s senior citizens fare across 96 countries.

Greece ranks low in the Index at 79 overall, and is the lowest ranked country in Western Europe. The 3 million people aged over 60 are in a difficult situation, finding it hard to make ends meet.

Greece ranks highest on the health domain (22) with life expectancy at 60 (24) and healthy life expectancy at 60 (17) being just below regional averages.

It also ranks high in the income security domain (28), with a high relative welfare of older people rate (106%) for its region, despite a low GNI per capita (US$26,215) and pension income coverage (77%) compared to other countries in the region.

Greece ranks lowest in the region in the capability domain (87) with the employment rate (35.6%) and educational attainment of older people (31.3%) both being below the regional averages (56.3% and 62.7% respectively).

It also ranks lowest in its region in the enabling environment domain (91) due to older people’s low satisfaction with transport (53%), safety (48%) and civic freedom (39%).
