Varoufakis: Tsipras was depressed during the night of referendum

Schaeuble knew that the program would fail, Varoufakis claims

Newsroom October 2 01:19

Former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis spoke to a French TV channel and claimed that Schaeuble told him that he knew that the new memorandum would fail.

“I’ll share with you a conversation I had with Wolfgang Schaeuble, when I was still a minister.

I said: “Wolfgang, this memorandum will bring us to the same situation we are now over six months, it is another plan doomed to fail”, and he replied: “Yes. This is a program which will fail, it is meant to fail”.

Mr. Varoufakis also referred to his relationship with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the reasons of his resignation: “In late April and early May, I saw Alexis very stressed. He compromised about things he did not want to. When you make a step back and your opponent does not act with the same way, then you surrender”.

Another instance that led to his resignation was the night of referendum. He hoped that the result would strengthen Greece’s position in negotiations, as Varoufakis said.

He mentioned that he entered Tsipras’ office thrilled about the result, while the Prime Minister was completely discouraged.

“Greek people showed an amazing courage by saying NO to the Troika, despite the capital controls and the media propaganda” he said adding that he was disappointed and that was why he resigned.

Asked about France’s role during the negotiations, the former minister argued that France did nothing. “I will answer as a diplomat saying that the role of France was not particularly strong during negotiation discussions… French Finance Minister has very little strength to talk about such important issues!”, he said.
