PM Tsipras admits gov’t was not ready to deal with the refugee flow

He admitted that there would be problems in the Greek islands during the tourist period

Newsroom March 1 10:54

The preparation of European Union and UN to address a possible humanitarian crisis, as well as the fact that FYROM has essentially closed its border with Greece confirm that thousands of refugees and immigrants are officially trapped in Greece.

Moreover, the fact that Greece has presented its plan to EU to deal with the humanitarian crisis asking for 450 million euros, as Alternate Minister for Migration Yannis Mouzalas stated, for the construction of reception centers and hiring staff shows that Greece has compromised with these developments.

On top of that, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras admitted that the Greek government was not ready to deal with such a large number of refugees, although he denied that the government underestimated the problem.

“We are experiencing the greatest refugee crisis and displacement of people after World War II,” Mr. Tsipras said in an interview with Star TV on Monday, adding that “we have to face a problem that is beyond the capacity of a country and a government.”

He noted that Europe itself cannot rise to the occasion. “We are witnessing the results of the unreasonable choices of the West,” he added referring to the situation in Syria.

Moreover, he admitted that there would be problems in the Greek islands during the tourist period saying that the government would fight so as tourism would not be damaged by the refugee crisis, while he recognized that the island of Kos does not cooperate with the government regarding the construction of a hotspot.
