Over 40,000 refugees and immigrants to remain in Greece

More than 11,000 thousands of refugees are currently waiting in Idomeni without food or place to sleep

The refugee crisis is suffocating Greece with thousands of stranded refugees and immigrants waiting to pass the borders and continue their journey, while the government is being prepared for the EU summit on refugee which will take place on March 7.

The situation is out of control, since about 40,000 refugees and immigrants are already in Greece, FYROM reinforces its security measures and extends its fence at Greece-FYROM border, refugees and immigrants continue arriving in the Greek islands, while Turkey refuses to cooperate even at NATO missions.

More than 11,000 thousands of refugees are currently waiting in Idomeni without food or place to sleep, while people are keep coming from all over the county.  The people line up waiting at least for 3 hours in order to get something to eat.

Piraeus port has also become a temporary camp hosting approximately 3,000, while the refugee camps are fully packed: More than 4,500 people are hosted at Elliniko, 1,500 at Schisto, 2,000 at Diavata, 2,600 at Cherso and 2,300 at Nea Kavala.

Moreover, about 4,000-5,000 refugees and immigrants are stuck in Greek islands, especially in Lesvos after government’s decision to stem the flow of refugees to mainland.

For the next two to three years Greece will be a resettlement country as Alternate Minister for Migration Yannis Mouzalas admitted yesterday to Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE).

As he said, more than 100,000 stranded refugees and immigrants are expected, while Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias stated that Greece will have to host 150,000 people.
