Despite the negative election results on ‘Super Sunday’ in 3 major German provinces by German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party, the CDU and the rise of the anti-immigrant right party AFD, the Chancellor’s spokesperson, Steffen Seibert said Monday the open immigration policy adopted by the German government would continue. Merkel herself admitted that drop in her party’s election power was caused by the refugee crisis, adding however, that a European solution was needed. ‘We need a European solution…to decrease the number of refugees coming to Germany and those in Greece’, she said. She went on to says that those who voted for the anti-immigrant party were protesting our policy on the matter. Merkel admitted that the closing of the Balkan route did benefit her country, but added that leaving the Balkan route closed would not be a viable solution, something evident by the images coming from Greece daily, she concluded.
