Love at first sight is a special thing. Man meets woman. Sparks fly upon each setting their eyes on the other and the rest is history. At least that’s how the general story is supposed to go. But in some cases the story doesn’t exactly end like in a romantic Hollywood movie. Real life can take some weird twists. Just ask Jan, a 68-year old man from Belgium, who thought he had found the love of his life in Indonesia 23 years ago. So in love was Jan with Monica that he rushed to process her documents as fast as possible so they could get married and start their new lives in Belgium. They decided not to have children as Jan already had some with his first wife. For 19 years they lived a normal life, until Monica decided to get a late night full time. She fooled him by pretending to menstruate using sanitary towels, ‘to conceal the truth’. Then things started getting a little weird, as Jan noticed photos of his wife with men on her computer. Rumours reached Jan that his beloved wife Monica was actually a ‘he’, smothering she eventually confirmed later. Monica had been born a boy and had undergone sex reassignment surgery later on in ‘his’ life. The case was taken to two court hearings in Belgium with Jan seeking an annulment of his marriage, but the judges ruled against him on the grounds that ‘he’ was a ’she’ when the two had tied the knot…
