The government isn’t in favor of Parliament Speaker Vangelis Meimarakis’ view to debate on a possible referendum on the part-privatization for the Public Power Corporation (PPC) over the weekend if 120 deputies call for this.
Mr. Meimarakis expressed his “personal” view that it would be possible to debate a possible referendum on the PPC part-privatization before it goes to vote in the House on Wednesday. He had said that it was possible that different proposals for a debate on a referendum could be considered together during a weekend debate despite the summer recess.
At a point there was concern as to whether the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) would manage to gather the necessary 120 signatures after the Independent Greeks and a small group of independent deputies that had aligned itself to the group’s positions.
The Greek Communist Party (KKE), however, insists on presenting its own referendum proposal, asking for all legislation to be emancipated from 1990 onwards and this created difficulties for the required 120 signatures in the form that the opposition wanted. Furthermore, SYRIZA did not want to rely on ultranationalist Golden Dawn’s support.
