Two Israeli divers discovered a priceless treasure trove of ancient Roman artifacts considered to be the most important fond in 3 decades. The treasures, which were showcased by the Israeli Antiquities Authorities, Monday, were found last month when the two divers came across an ancient shipwreck near the port of Caesarea. Ofer Raanan, one of the two divers, said the it took them a couple of seconds for them to understand what was going on. After they brought the second sculpture they discovered to the surface they started searching the larger area and uncovered more ancient artifacts. The Israeli Antiquities Authorities said the Roma-era cargo included bronze statues, lamps, jars, animal-shaped objects, anchors and thousands of coins with images of the first Roman Christian Emperor Constantine. Some of them date back to the 4th century while other go back to the 1st and 2nd centuries. The port at Caesarea was commissioned by Herod the Great in the first century BC and became an important economic artery in the Mediterranean Sea until it sank for unknown reasons soon after its completion.
