A wildfire that broke out on Saturday on northern Rhodes on Sunday was finally put under partial control after burning hundreds of hectares of woodland.
Firefighters remain in the area to face any rekindling in the several fronts while firefighting aircrafts continue the water-dropping operation.
Many animals were unable to escape from the fury of fire and were burned.
The image of a deer that seeks shelter close to the people, uploaded by Secretary-General of Decentralized Administration Nikos Theodoridis, shows the extent of the disaster in the area. The firefighters talk about a huge ecological disaster, while many animals were burned.
Experts will arrive in Rhodes to examine the extent of ecological disaster, while environmental organizations will also visit the island in order to replace, if possible, the wildlife in forests that were burned.
