The European commission plans to suspend all project funding to Greece channeled through the European Regional Development Fund between 2014 and 2020, due to suspicions that a cartel has been exploiting the amounts flowing into the country. According to an internal document by Director General for Regional and Urban Policy, Walter Deffaa, who cites a press briefing by the Greek Commission on Competition on May 17, Greek authorities have discovered a series of irregularities in tenders for large EU-funded infrastructure projects. Then documents points out the existence of cartels made up of Greek and foreign construction companies operating in the country since 1989, who have ‘benefited’ from the EU funds. The cartel is reportedly involved in the areas of road construction, railways, subway construction etc. The freezing of the funds is expected to be enacted after the visit of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in Greece comes to an end.
