In light of Barack Obama’s European visit, German press reports concur in the belief that Berlin will not be swayed by the U.S. president’s repeated calls for Greek debt relief and structural reforms — at least not until after the German federal elections in 2017.

Reporting that “the Obama visit brought nothing for Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who hopes for a haircut of the debt,” the German daily Bild said that Berlin dismissed such a scenario as improbable, quoting an unnamed chancellery source as saying: “what Tsipras and certain American diplomats are circulating is Athens’ usual propaganda….If we meet this request in the current phase and situation, the country (Greece) will be on the edge again in three years because nothing will have changed in vital sectors.”
