Cyprus dispute: Akinci blackmails the Greek-Cypriot side

Another provocative statement from the Turkish-Cypriot leader

Newsroom March 3 09:12

The leader of the Turkish-Cypriot community stated that he will sit again on the negotiating table only when the Cypriot Parliament withdraws its decision on the “Unification Referendum”.

The Cypriot Parliament had voted in favor of adding a chapter in the schools of the Republic of Cyprus about the Unification Referendum that took place in 1950 when the Cypriot people (both Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots) had voted in favor of a unification of the island with Greece.

This infuriated the Turkish-Cypriot community leader Akinci and he withdraw from the negotiations on the resolution of the Cyprus dispute.

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiades, counter-argued that the Turkish-Cypriot side is celebrating every year the Turkish invasion of 1974, adding that Akinci’s reaction is staged in order to be used as an alibi to withdraw from the negotiations and blame the Greek-Cypriots for this.
