The former candidate for the French left for the presidency of France, Jean-Luc Mélenchon announced on Friday that he was withdrawing from the position of Co-Chair of the radical Left Party (PG), but assuring that he will continue its political struggle.
Speaking to party leaders at a conference the 63year old Mélenchon stressed that he will not abandon politics and that his resignation from the leadership is part of the reorganization plan after the party’s recent electoral failures.
Further, he revealed that Martine Bigiar the other president of PG, will also resign from office in order to devote herself to the European network of ecosocialism.
Mélenchon took fourth place in the presidential elections of 2012, behind the winner Francois Hollande, the outgoing president Nicolas Sarkozy and the National Front candidate Marine Le Pen.
In the recent elections the Left Front, the alliance of PG with the Communists, won 6%, while the right-wing swept concentrating 25% of the votes.
